Livelihood Empowerment
This program helps graduates move beyond training by connecting them to networks, opportunities, and pathways that turn their skills into meaningful work and sustainable income.
The Challenge
In Kayole slums and its surrounding areas, many households continue to live in extreme poverty, surviving on less than a dollar a day. In some cases, families can only afford one meal per day, making it difficult to meet even the most basic human needs.
This level of deprivation means that many young people grow up without adequate access to shelter, food, clothing, education, or skills development opportunities. As a result, a large proportion of youth are left vulnerable, unemployed, and trapped in a cycle of poverty that limits their potential and future prospects. Without targeted intervention, this situation continues to deepen social and economic inequality, making it harder for young people to break free from poverty and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
The Solution
We build the bridges that turn skills into real economic opportunity—helping young people move from training into jobs, customers, internships, and sustainable income.
Our program ensures that every youth who completes training is actively connected to job and market linkages, closing the gap between skills acquisition and real-world application. This enables beneficiaries to transition into employment or self-employment with practical earning opportunities. We also provide business startup support in the form of seed capital to selected graduates, empowering them to establish and grow their own income-generating enterprises and achieve financial independence.
In addition, we facilitate structured internship placements in collaboration with host organizations and industry partners. These placements provide hands-on workplace experience, strengthen technical competencies, and build professional networks that enhance long-term employability. For youth who learn best through practice, we also offer apprenticeship pathways where they train under experienced professionals in real work environments, gaining skills while earning an income.
Together, these interventions create a complete pathway—from training to employment, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihoods—ensuring that young people are not only skilled but economically empowered. As a result, they are able to meet their basic needs, support their households, and build stable, dignified lives while contributing positively to their communities.
Expected outcomes
Program Model: Skills-to-Livelihoods Model
The Skills-to-Livelihoods Model directly addresses the gaps by creating a continuous pathway from training to income generation. It begins with competency-based technical and vocational training that equips youth with practical, market-relevant skills. However, unlike traditional training approaches, it does not end at certification. Instead, it extends into structured transition support that ensures skills are fully converted into livelihoods.
Graduates are linked to job opportunities, internships, apprenticeships, and market networks that enable them to apply their skills in real economic environments. For those pursuing entrepreneurship, the model provides startup capital and business support to help them establish and grow income-generating enterprises. This ensures that youth are not only trained but also actively integrated into the economy.
Through this approach, the model transforms unemployed and vulnerable youth into productive, self-reliant individuals. It breaks the cycle of poverty by ensuring that skills lead directly to income, dignity, and improved living conditions. Ultimately, it creates a sustainable ecosystem where young people can meet their basic needs, support their families, and contribute positively to community and national development.
